Osaka Tenmangu Shrine has its beginnings in the year 650 (Nara period). It has been over 1,000 years since Sugawara no Michizane was enshrined there in the Heian Period, and people from all over Japan come to worship.
Alongside Tokyo's Kanda Matsuri and Kyoto's Gion Matsuri, Tenjin Matsuri summer festival at Tenmangu Shrine (every July) is one of Japan's three biggest festivals, attended by approximately 1.3 million people. The festival has over 1,000 years of history, and the funatogyo boat procession, including over 100 boats, is one of its highlights.
