Ueno Zoological Gardens is a natural retreat in the heart of the city. Managed by the city the zoo raises a wide variety of animals from across the globe.
The East Garden is located on the large tree-covered hills of Ueno Gardens, and houses the mid-sized primates, as well as the Gorilla Woods and Tiger Forest, Elephant Forest, Bear Hill, and Polar Bears and Seal Oceans.
In the West Garden, to the north of the lotus covered Shinobazu Pond, you can meet African animals with giraffes, hippos, rhinoceros, shoebill storks, and aye-ayes. You can also explore the Panda Forest, Small Mammal House, Amphibian and Reptile House, and Children’s Zoo with farm animals.
