Matsunoo Taisha Shrine was founded in 701, during the Asuka Period, which makes it one of Kyoto's oldest shrines. It is also famous as a god of Japanese sake.
The inner shrine has been designated an important cultural asset. The Shinkosai and Kankosai festivals, together known as the Matsuo Matsuri, have traditions stretching back all the way to the 9th century. They are held in April and May each year, and approximately 3,000 kerria, or "yamabuki" flowers, beautifully brighten the shrine's grounds during this time.
