An oasis of nature in the heart of the city
An oasis of nature in the heart of the city
Meiji Shrine was built in 1920 to enshrine Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. The large 700,000㎡ space has an inner garden of lush green forests, and an outer garden that hosts a number of sports. Meiji Shrine is also known for attracting the highest number of people in Japan for the traditional first shrine visit of the year.
The Meiji forest in the center has become an oasis for people to enjoy the various trees and bird life. The irises here are usually at their best in June, when 1,500 irises of about 150 species are in full bloom.
